Silagen Silicone Scar Gel SPF 30 — Silicone and Sunscreen in One Step

Silagen Scar Gel SPF 30 combines a medical-grade silicone scar gel with broad-spectrum SPF 30, so a scar keeps its silicone layer and gets sun protection without a separate sunscreen layered on top.

Why sun protection matters for scars

Scar tissue is more sensitive to UV than the skin around it. Sun exposure while a scar is still maturing can leave it permanently darker than the surrounding skin tone, even when it heals flat.

Why patients use it

  • Two jobs, one product: silicone occlusion plus SPF 30 in a single application.
  • Made for scars that show: useful anywhere a scar is regularly uncovered.
  • Clear, thin finish: dries to a flexible layer that wears under clothing or on its own.

How to use

  1. Apply a thin layer twice daily to clean, dry, fully closed skin. Not for use on open wounds.
  2. Switch to the SPF version once a scar will be exposed to daylight, or as it matures and loses its pink color — often around 12 weeks.
  3. Reapply during long days outdoors, and after swimming, sweating or towel drying.

Sun and scars: common questions

Can regular sunscreen go on a new scar?
Once the skin is fully closed, yes, and a gentle mineral sunscreen is a reasonable choice. A silicone gel with SPF built in means one product instead of two, which makes daily use easier to sustain.

How long should a scar be protected from the sun?
Dr. Piazza recommends sun protection for the first 18 months, while a scar is still maturing.

Does the sun make scars darker?
Yes. UV exposure can trigger pigmentation in maturing scar tissue, and that discoloration can become permanent.
